I am a landed immigrant in Canada on an Australian passport and will be in transit through the states .- just changing planes. Do I need a visa

As a general rule, Australian citizens don't need a visa for a short visit or transit through the USA. Australia is one of the Visa Waiver countries.

Yes you do. If you were visiting, you could come on a visa waiver, but as you are transiting, you need a visa for that.
