Legal Question in Immigration Law in California

I'm not legal in the U.S., but i owe a real state property. The problem is that I'm having trouble making my payments. I looked for advice trough a Real State agent and she recommended me to do a short sale, because im up side down with the value of my property. My question is, "if i do a short sale today and loose my property would it afect me in the future when i try to fix my legal statuse?" im not sure if the agent sugested me to do a short sale to make money or if this is the best way to go for now... as of right now im current im just having trouble makeing my payment.

Having or not having a real estate in the USA doesn't affect your immigrant status, and doesn't give any immigration benefits or preferences.
