Legal Question in Immigration Law in California
If I sign a financial affidavit of support for my brother's immigration sponsorship, will I also be liable & financially responsible for his spouse and a minor child from a previous relationship? Would I need to retain an attorney to prepare the affidavit of support? Thank you.
1 Answer from Attorneys
A person who executes the I-864 Affidavit of support for immigration purposes takes financial responsibility only for sponsored immigrant (and his family members - if included into the Affidavit and sponsored). Otherwise, not responsible for sponsored immigrant's dependents who are not being sponsored in this Affidavit of Support.
If you require assistance with the proper preparation of the Affidavit and supporting documentation on your part, yes, you may hire an attorney to help you specifically with the affidavit.
