Legal Question in Insurance Law in California

First Deduction vs. Issue Date

I have a new short term disability insurance policy. Deductions for this policy began 7/24/2003 but the coverage didn't begin until 9/1/2003 according to the company. I've had an incident that occurred between these dates and the insurance company is denying coverage. I've been told that insurance coverage (by law) has to begin with the first deduction.

Is this true?

Re: First Deduction vs. Issue Date

You must read the policy itself along with any brochures or other written materials involved. Most policies have a waiting period, from 30 to 90 days. The policy is in force, but you have to wait for the benefits to start. It is like a "time" deductible.

So begin with the actual contract, etc., and after you see what it is you bought, go from there.
