Legal Question in Intellectual Property in California
How much does it cost to have an attorney do a patent search for me to make sure my invention can be patent and sold in retail store?

It depends on the amount of prior art and the extent of the search. In general it can run between 500.00 to 3000.00. If you want an attorney to interpret the search this is an additional fee.

As the other attorney says, there are a number of factors affecting a search fee. I strongly recommend you use a patent attorney to conduct and interpret the search of the patent records. This is a very complex area. Consult with a patent attorney in your area for specifics.

A thorough patent search, analysis of the results, and legal opinion regarding patentability, may generally range in cost from $500-$2500 depending on the complexity of the invention. A patentability search for a relatively simple technology will typically be the least expensive.
