Legal Question in Intellectual Property in California

I am looking to start a pet boutique. There are several items bearing labels like "chanel" or "juicy couture" that are not originally made by the manufacturers, yet they do carry the trademark symbol. They were created by individuals not affiliated with the companies, and the products are not replicas of products created by/for the companies. Is it illegal to sell these products if I state that they are not affiliated with the company itself? "Inspired" in some sort?

Anyone in the distribution chain would be subject to lawsuit and injunction from the legitimate rights holders, that's what the copyright and trademark laws are designed for.
