Legal Question in Employment Law in California

In August of this year I informed my boss I would be moving out of state in December. A week later those plans had fallen through. He informed me that he had offered my position to another employee and starting on September 1st I would lose my salary position. Was this legal?

You're kidding, right? You really think there's a law that says when an at will employee, whom you could fire at any time for any non-discriminatory reason, gives notice they are going to quit, they suddenly get a right to keep their job until they are ready to quit, AND they can change their mind, and now it's illegal to let them go and replace them? Really? You actually think there would be a law like that?
