Citizenship Question for Job Applicant

Is it legal to ask a job applicant both verbally and on a job application if they are a US Citizen? This would be for a job position that requires such for security clearance at a client site. This is for private sector. Thank you.

Maybe; itepends on several issues. More importantly, you should not be willing to place your company in legal jeapordy on the basis of a casual internet response, no matter how well meaning.
