Legal Question in Employment Law in California

civil case

A civil case was brought against me for shoplifting and restitution has been paid. I work for a company that does business with the store I was accused of steeling from. What are my privacy rights? Is the store at liberty to discuss the details of the situation with my employer?

Re: civil case

Since a case was filed against you, it is a matter of public record. The details are available at the courthouse, or on the court's website for all to see. There probably is no privacy right. However, if someone at the store embellishes the facts, then you might have a case for defamation -- although you probably wouldn't find much sympathy because of the underlying theft.
