Legal Question in Employment Law in California

Disclosing a firing

Is it legal for an executive to tell his employees that another employee

has been fired? What if that information is quickly leaked to people

outside that company? Is the company responsible for any damages?

Unless false information is provided, it is not defamatory.

If provably false info is leaked, then it could be slander. If it is true info, there isn't much can be done without a showing the company was trying to damage your reputation, or trying to prevent someone from hiring you. Frequently, what can be done is to have an attorney write the company a 'threat' letter to get them to stop doing so, and limit further damage. Contact me if interested in discussing.
