Legal Question in Employment Law in California

I am currently employed at full time in California. An opportunity to work part-time (as needed) as a independent contractor came along. The company I work for full time has gone through two rounds of lay-offs and the company's survival is uncertain. If I get laid-off from my full time job, will taking the contract job disqualify me from collecting unemployment?

Probably. You are required to report your income as an independent contractor, which may disqualify you from unemployment benefits unless your income falls below the limits imposed by EDD. Also, to be eligible to receive benefits, you must look for a job. If your position as an independent contractor prevents you fro doing so, you will not be eligible.
