Can an employee be punished for sleeping due to prescribed medication?

Yes, regardless of 'cause'. Only IF you have a legally recognized and defined 'disability', then the employer is obligated to try to make reasonable accommodation in accordance with your doctor's disability recommendations. Doesn't sound like your situation. Sleeping on the job would not be a reasonable accommodation.
