Legal Question in Employment Law in California
Employment problem
My office manager told me that when I drive the attorneys to and from the courthouse for court that I am to ''keep my mouth shut and be a silent chauffeur.'' I am a Legal Assistant, and was wondering if this was acceptable behavior on her part.

There is no question this sounds like an abusive comment but I will need to know more to advise if this is "illegal".

Re: Employment problem
What you are asking is really a question of good taste and business ethics, unfortunately.
It might be true that this is not "acceptable behavior," that is different that "illegal" behavior. They could tell you that you have to sing the Star Spangled Banner all the way to the courthouse and if you refuse they can fire you.
One possible angle is if they pay you a salary you might have an overtime claim, because being a "chauffeur" is non-exempt work.
Sorry I could not be of more help.
