can i be fired for having to miss work to appear as a defendent in a court case

If you are an at-will employee in California, you can be terminated for any reason that does not constitute unlawful discrimination. Thus, an employee can be terminated for missing work in order to appear in court. Of course, if the reason is actually a pretext for unlawful discrimination based on race, gender, age, or other unlawful classification.
