Legal Question in Employment Law in California

Forced Vacation Time

I work for a University in California. We do not take every holiday off on the date of observance (i.e. President's Day) but defer them until the end of the year so that we get a week off at Christmas. The entier last week of December we were closed. However, there were not enough deferred holiday days to cover the time off although nobody said anything until after the start of the year. Even though the campus was closed and I was prevented from coming into work, I am being forced to use vacation time. Can they do this? I know an employer can tell you when to use vacation time, but can they close the office and still force you to take vacation time on those days?

Re: Forced Vacation Time

You are in a union, ask them, as they are the ONLY recourse for you.

The previous message should have said "IF" you are in a union. It also should have said that if you are not in a union, and believe you are owed compensation, you can file a claim with the Labor Commissioner and explain all the details to them.
