Legal Question in Employment Law in California

My friend resigned from his job and gave three months notice.

He has been working there for >10 yrs as top level paid employee in a large company (>500 employees, multisites in US), doctorate level (>$185K/ yr) in highly speciliazed tech services and well respected as highly productive and influential technical personnel. He was asked to leave the same day he submitted his resignation letter and was told that he would receive two weeks pay plus all his PTO balance as final paycheck in the mail. He neversigned any contract or acknowedgement for this company practice

Is this fair and legal? What is his right to demand for three months pay per his resignation letter?

Thanks!

He quit and acted in good faith, but did he not expect the company to do this? No, he is not 'entitled' to anything. He should have negotiated a deal before quitting. Given the high level job, his attorney may be able to negotiate a settlement. If he is willing to attempt that, have him contact me. I've been doing employment law like this for over 20 years.
