Legal Question in Employment Law in California

I am taking a client to small claims court for not paying me. I finished the work back in December. I have emails from him saying he will pay me but has not done so. We don't have a contract but he has acknowledged that he owes me the money. Is there anything I should bring to court besides the invoice and emails from him? Is there a standard amount of time the the payment is due? He originally said he would pay me in the first week.

Yes, if it was some kind of intellectual work (i.e. designs, drawings, writing), or if you have photographs of your work, bring those, too.
You might also bring invoices on other jobs to show how much your customary rate is, just in case there's a question about that. Also, you might bring a witness who will testify that she/he saw you do the work, and the scope of the work.
Bring all your 'proof' and tell your story logically.
