Legal Question in Employment Law in California

Can an illegal file - wage and hour complaint

We had an employee that worked for us, for over a year. We

received noticed that his papers were incorreect (I-9) we fired

him, a year later he file an hour and wage claim. We know the

claim is false, but can he file such a claim in California.
