Legal Question in Employment Law in California

Labor Laws

We have hourly employees. They show up at 7:00am. We find out that there is no work for the day and want to send them home. I've heard rumors that there is a law we have to pay them a minimum of 4 hours just becasue they showed up? Is there truth to this statement?

Thank you Law Guru's!

Re: Labor Laws

Duh.

Sorry for the sarcasm, but that question called for it. Yes, the 'rumors' are true, they are due the minimum payment if they show up. That's called fair [legal] treatment. If they have to bring a claim at the Labor Commissioner to enforce it, your company faces penalties and interest payments as well, and attorney fees if you fight it. You really need to get education and training on your responsibilities and obligations to employees before something legally serious bites you in the pocketbook.
