i left my job in a large retail store and found that my former employer was telling customers about how i quit.Is this legal?

Yes.

What about the term 'free speech' do you object to? They could be sued for slander if they lied, but not if they are merely telling the truth when asked 'where he went'.

As long as they don't lie in a way that causes you economic harm, they have done nothing illegal.
