Legal Question in Employment Law in California

A local DA showed up at our restaurant and requested copies of one of our current employee's employment application and a copy of his time sheets for a specified period. He seems to be investigating a "car theft" reported by that employee. Can I hand those documents over without a subpeona or some kind of court order?

It seems to me that the employment application is private and should not be released without an appropriate court order or subpoena. You might speak with your attorney about your exposure for a potential claim of invasion of privacy.
