Male / Female hotel rooms

My job requires frequent out of town travel, usually several days at a time. I am on a two person team. Employer pays for accomodations. Can they require I share a room with male co-worker? We are not a couple or related. I am payed by the project.

They shouldn't, because they could be setting themselves up for more trouble than the extra room is worth. Further, you're entitled to your privacy. See if you can work something out to have your own room or share it with a female, at the very least.

No.

As to your payment on a project basis, you may want to explore whether that is a proper method of payment. Do you work more than 8 hours a day or 40 in a week? If yes, you may have a claim for overtime compensation.

The real question is how do you deal wsith an employer who is requiring you to do that -- and what do you want to do about it. The advice I would give you is best left to a private discussion -- these messages are public (and have been used against employees in past lawsuits.) No, the employer should not require you to share the room. You should complain in writing about it, but you'd be better served if you have an attorney assisting you. Feel free to contact me at my private email. Good luck.

No, they can't, not without creating a potential for a sexual hostile environment claim. Contact me if you decide you need legal help.
