my mother was working as a housekeeper for 21 years in beverly hills and the home owners decided to sell the house and move to miami leaving my mother unemployed and not providing her with a letter of recommendation or compensation is there anything that can be done?

Your mother probably has no legal rights. Have you tried contacting the family and asking for a letter of recommendation?

If she is claiming unpaid wages, she can file a claim with the Labor Commissioner. Other than that, what she wants would have to come through negotiation with the employer. The law does not require severance pay, if that is what she wants.
