Legal Question in Employment Law in California

Offer Rescintion

A couple of days ago, I was given a verbal offer of employment by a regional supervisor. He informed me of my start date, my pay rate, and several other pieces of information over the telephone. He asked if the week and a half notice would be acceptable to my current employer. I told the supervisor that it should be fine. Later on that day, I informed the assistant manager at my current job of the offer and gave him my ''week and a half'' notice. The next day, the regional supervisor called to inform me that the offer had been rescinded due to ''restructuring''. I immediately spoke to my assistant manager and asked if I could take back my ''week and a half'' notice and continue working at my current job. My assistant manager said that it SHOULD be fine but that he'll have to talk to his immediate supervisor. My assistant manager's demeanor didn't look promising. My questions about this are: 1. Did my potential employer have the right to rescind the offer? 2. Is the regional supervisor and the potential employer responsible if I lost favor at my current job because of the situation? Any advice would be greatly appreciated?

Re: Offer Rescintion

Your best remedy is to beg and plead to keep your job, as there is no effective remedy against the prospective employer. You could spend a bunch of attorney fees, and not be happy with the outcome. Next time, get promises in writing.
