Many employment lawyers will take such cases on contingency, but might ask for your contribution to hard costs, such as postage, depositions, etc. Should should discuss the financial arrangement up front.

Nice try. Either your case is worth taking on normal terms of contingency with modest retainer, or its not worth taking at all. If attorneys are telling you they'll only take it on hourly basis, then I suspect it isn't worth taking and they're simply trying to get rid of you. It must have merit [winability], value [high dollar judgment potential] and collectability [defendant with money]. Without all three, no one is going to be interested.
