Legal Question in Employment Law in California

Recently $600 was stolen from my employer do to me leaving a money bag out and accesible to passerbies. In other words not in our safe. I am being held accountable and being asked to pay the stolen amount even though it was not stolen during my shift. There is no security as in cameras to catch someone. Do they have a right to ask me to pay this stolen amount?

Employees are not liable for losses and damages unless guilty of gross negligence amounting to misconduct, or criminal acts. They would have to sue you for the damages. Simple negligence and stupidity get you fired though.
