Legal Question in Employment Law in California
I have been recently terminated from my job as a Creative Director of Marketing for a Shopping Center. The shopping center decided to outsource my position as well as another marketing position. I have a stellar work history with the company with great reviews. The day following my termination while I was out running errands the Vice-President of the company left me a voicemail at 3pm and 3:30 unable to locate files and applications on my work computer, when I got home around 4pm I checked my email to find an email from him stating he stopped payment on my severance check, and contacted the Sheriffs Dept. A sheriff''s deputy paid me a visit at around 5:30 that evening. Then just after 5:30 I received a phone call from one of the store owners at the shopping center saying that the Vice-President send out a mass email to all the merchants accusing me of theft. She forwarded the email to me. So, I have a few issues, the first one: from the time the Vice-President initially attempted to contact me to the time payment was stopped on my severance check, a sheriff showed up at my house and the nasty email went out was a time span of only 2.5 hours, he did not give me time to respond. The second and biggest concern of mine is that I own 4 monthly magazines and a small graphic design firm, and many of these merchants who received his mass email are previous, current and potential advertisers of mine, I stand to loose thousands of dollars in revenue because of his defamatory email. My company also designs websites for several of these merchants as well as direct mail pieces. I feel he purposely sent out this email to damage my company especially since the shopping center produces a monthly publication which is in direct competition of advertising revenue with my magazines. I apologize for the long explanation, (there is actually several other details that I've not mentioned) but in speaking to a friend who is an attorney he feels I have a case for libel and I could receive treble damages regarding my severance pay, his partner considered representing me but since his wife was employed at one time with the same shopping center there would be a possibility it would be thrown out of court. So, are there any attorneys who would consider taking my case?

Hello.
It's possible that you have a legitimate and significant claim for slander/defamation, considering the acts and the widespread publication of the falsehoods about you. If you would like to discuss this, feel free to follow up.

Ugly situation, but you seem to have a meritorious slander claim. Consult with a local experienced attorney asap, there are certainly more than the one you spoke with. Ask friends and associates for a referral. If you can't find one, feel free to contact me.
