Legal Question in Employment Law in California

I was recently "let go" from work and told i cold come back in april. my supervisor said to fix my personal problems in the mean time. i was denied un-employment because the owner of the store told them i had drug and/or alcohol problems. my supervisor gave me the impression that this was a lay-off and i took it only because i thought i could collect un-employment and pay my bills feed my family. i never was found to have or be under the influence at work. what can i do? can they he say that about me?
