California is an at will state so a person can be laid off for no reason. Working at a place for ten years gives you no vested interest in being able to remain there.

The right to file for unemployment benefits.
Absent any 'illegal discrimination' by the employer, they are completely free to terminate you any time for any reason, since you are an 'at will' employee unless you are in a union, in civil service, or have a written employment contract.
