Legal Question in Employment Law in California
Sexual Harassment by making me read out loud
My employer recently directed me to read aloud several emails that my boss stated contained sexual material. She said she needed me to read them aloud so that I would understand them. I said that I was not comfortable with using this language, and was told that it is a directive, meaning if I disobey, I would be considered subordinate which is grounds for termination. I read the emails in the presence of 2 other supervisory staff. All female. When I left the meeting, my boss said 'bitch' to my back.

Re: Sexual Harassment by making me read out loud
The circumstances determine whether this is improperly creating a sexually offensive environment. If this was part of a training session, then maybe it could somehow be explained away. But if this was simply overbearing mgmt style and in public, so to speak, then it sounds like you have grounds to complain. Write up a full description of the events and circumstances, and contact me if interested in discussing it further.
