Legal Question in Employment Law in California

termination laws

To whom it may concern,

I am applying to be a police officer. I have passed most

of the tests and they are conducting a background

check. During the background check they must contact

my current employer.

Q: Can my employer terminate me when they find out

that I am applying for a different job?

My contract says that I am an ''at will'' employee. My fear

is that I will not pass the final test to enter the police

academy and at the same time my present employer

will fire me.

Q2: are there any laws that can protect me?

Thank you in advance for you time,

Re: termination laws

Q1: yup

Q2: nope

That is the risk you run, because you are demonstrating you are not commited to continued employment at the company.

Re: termination laws

At will means at will and you can be terminated any time for just about anything. Hopefully you will pass just fine and enjoy a fine career in law enforcement. Good luck-Martin
