Legal Question in Employment Law in California

Hi, I work as the IT Manager at a small business and one of my staff members recently came to me and complained that over the last few months she has been loosing money on a regular basis and that she suspected someone in the office has been stealing from her. She asked if I could help her setup a webcam at her desk recording a small portion of her desk where she keeps her personal belongings including her purse. Needless to say the video confirmed her suspicions on the very first day she recorded. On tape was one of our co-workers going through her purse and stealing money out of her wallet. As a result that employee has been terminated but has also put me in the spotlight as I am the one who helped her setup the camera without first notifying my boss, the owner of the company. Is my part and my involvement in this whole dilemma illegal? Did I break any laws? Am I a criminal and if I am who is the victim? My boss is saying that it is and is seriously considering suspending me. Thank you in advance for your help. Joe

You did nothing wrong, stop worrying. Tell you boss to consult with counsel before doing something stupid like that.
