Legal Question in Employment Law in California

I work for a private christian school, they are attempting to force a 10% tithing to be deducted from my wage. I do not go to this church and tith elsewhere. I've worked there over 5 yrs. This was not discussed nor were we told, they just included it in our new contract. What is the legality of this? Thanks

Churches are essentially the only employers immune from the discrimination laws, and they are free to enforce 'religious' rules upon employees. Plus, the employer is entitled to set and change hours, duties, titles, compensation, benefits, leaves, vacations, holidays, etc. just not retroactively. You can stay or leave, your choice.

In general, unless an employee is civil service, in a union, or has a written employment contract, they are an 'at will' employee that can be disciplined or fired any time for any reason, with or without cause or explanation. The employee's goal should be to keep the employer happy.
