Legal Question in Employment Law in California
I worked for a start-up company for nearly a year and never got paid. During the third month, I was offered the 1099 status by email and was told by the owner/CEO that I'll get paid on certain dates. No paperwork was ever done. I waited thinking he needs some revenue to pay me as we didn't get much business. He ordered me work through emails and gave me the title 'Director' and was ordered to meet with clients as well as do all delivery work. I recently was promoted to CEO as well, as the company depended on me. I finally emailed requesting pay for my work and he shut down the company. Now he says he intended to never pay me or just pay me $1000 or so. There were 3 other employees whose monthly salary ranged from $10K, $5K & $3K. No amount of compensation was ever discussed. My work was done in good faith and trust. I did the most important tasks in the company. What are my rights?

Your rights are to be paid for your work. Your remedy is to sue for unpaid compensation, penalties, interest and attorney fees. If serious about pursing this, feel free to contact me to discuss your evidence and the financial viability of the company and owners.
