Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

Lease Renewal

I was signed a lease for 1 year and

about six months into it the landlord

asked me if I wanted to renew for

next year, at the time I wanted to

and so I signed a paper saying I

would renew the lease, well it turns

out I didn't stay and was subletting

but thosesubletters just bailed on me

and the landlord says I'm responsible

but I don't know if I am or not

because a) I haven't lived there in 11

months and b) I never signed a new

lease just a paper saying I would

renew. Am I liable?
