Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

Can you get a money judgement in California without personal service?

I have a judgement against me in L.A. California and I was never personally served. Instead, a notice was posted at my old address which I knew nothing about. There was a default judgement given against me (since I did not know about the case) for $3,200. In Iowa, I know you cannot get a money judgement without personal service. Is this possible/legal in California? Thanks for your help.

The plaintiff had to serve you at least by mail with the request for entry of default. Once the default was entered, it could proceed to judgment without notifying you. Since you've moved out of state, and if you have a defense, you can hire an attorney to assist you in setting aside the default and default judgment.

If you believe you do owe the debt, you might have an attorney in IA assist you in negotiating a possible reduction in the judgment and a payment plan.
