Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California
Raising rent
I own property in CA and have not raised the rent in 6 years. I do not have a written agreement, but intend to rectify that to include provisions for raising the rent. How much can I raise the rent by? The current rent is $1200/mo. and I want to raise the rent to the prevailing rate for the area of $2000/mo. Am I limited to the amount that I can raise it by? How often can I raise the rent and by what amounts? Thank you for your time.

Re: Raising rent
Unless you live in a jursidiction that has rent control (and you would know if you do), you can raise rent as much as you want and as often as you want upon 30 days notice. You can also require the tenant to sign a new lease agreement or move out in 30 days.
