Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

Hello, I am a renter in San Francisco, CA. A tenant in my building assaulted me this past May 2016. My property management company asked me to file assault charges to document it and send them a copy. I filed charges, sent them the report and they did nothing. This past weekend I was verbally assaulted again by this person who screamed and swore at me over and over again. The following day he lunged at me attempted to grab my arm, I was able to get away without harm. My question is, what is a landlords responsibility in this situation? Do they have any obligation to provide a safe environment for their tenants? Please let me know what my rights are. This person has proven himself to be violent and I am beginning to fear for my safety in my own home.

You can get a civil harassment restraining order. The San Francisco superior court has a self-help center on the 5th floor. Bring all the information with you -- dates, times, name, physical description of the person, what was said. The more you describe the incident on the court documents, the better. You might want to get a copy of the police report to attach as evidence. As for the landlord, he/she must ensure your quiet enjoyment of your rental premises. You might talk to tenants' organizations in SF to determine your next step, if any, with regard to the landlord.
