Can I use an abbreviated version of my first name to sign legal documents? For instance, if my legal name was Bobby and I signed as Bob.

You can use whatever name you want to but the other parties involved might insist on your using the name on your birth certificate.

The most important thing when signing legal documents is your intent to sign them. How you sign is largely irrevelant.
