Legal Question in Personal Injury in California

Insurance Company letters that claim that I'm responsible for an accident

My mother keeps receiving letters from an insurance company claiming that their records indicate that she was responsible for an accident and she owes 200 dollars. Upon contacting the insurance company there is no police report on file, and the lady is claiming that she was hit and the other car left. My mother is very old and scared that she is liable for something she has no knowledge of. Does she have to respond to the annoying letters or should she wait until they decide to take further action? She wasn't involved in an accident, and doesn't want her insurance to go up because of this.

Put things in writing. Send them back a letter denying involvement in the accident, instructing them to stop harassing you about an erroroneous claim and without proof of involvement. If they sue, turn it over to your insurance company to defend against it.
