When you say "you had no insurance", does that mean you yourself or your father had no coverage on the car? Who is the registered owner of the car? If you owned your own vehicle with insurance on it, that possibly could cover you and your dad. If you were served with a lawsuit, you need to file an answer within 30 days. Contact an atty, paralegal or legal aid. Both you and your father would be responsible for the damages. If there is no insurance available anywhere, try to work out a settlement with the other side.

If you had any insurance at all, you should forward this lawsuit to your insurance carrier. They typically will cover the costs of your defense and any eventual judgment, up to the policy limits of the insurance contract.

If you truly didn't have insurance, you are going to need to file an answer within 30 days. From there, you have three options:

1. You can negotiate and settle the matter;

2. You can defend the lawsuit in court; or

3. You can file bankruptcy.

You can do these in any combination, with or without an attorney.
