Legal Question in Personal Injury in California

I was recently shot collecting a debt that was owed to me from a recently former roommate of mine. My ex roommate owed me a pound of weed for me working in his weed garden. He made a verble agreement with me then decided to renege on paying me so I went to my previous home jumped the side gate went into the back yard and began tearing branches off of a plant and began stuffing my backpack with the weed I was owed, then the sliding glass door opened an my former roommate jeri higby came out back and asked me what the fck I'm doing an internship say I'm collecting my pay and he goes back inside. I continue filling my backpack then I hear the sliding glass door open again so I look and see a 12 gauge shotgun pointing at me from behind a certain I laughed and continued to fill my backpack then jeri higby jump out into the backyard was pointing the 12 gauge at me I turn for the next plant and he shot me in my stomach with a 12 gauge birdshot from 15_20 feet the police arrested higby on suspicion of assult with fire arm I was in hospital Truma for a weak and a half and now am recovering from several stomach Truma and arm an. Hand damage is there any thing I can do

Sure, you can sue him, and spend money and time doing so. But, does the criminal have any substantial assets and income from which you would be able to collect a judgment? Is he rich? If he has nothing, nothing is what the case is worth. He's going to be in prison, obviously without a job, and his 'assets' are going to be seized and forfeited. .
