Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California

Hi there. Sorry to bother you with a question I shouldn't be asking but I've been issued a citation for 484(a) PC. Stolen property cost less than $25- also I did not enter the store with intent- bought other items and had enough money on my person to purchase the items I attempted to steal. Hiring someone to defend me is out of the question. This is my first offense, I am 19 years old. What, in your opinion, would be the best course of action for me to take?

Thank you.

True, it's a criminal law question, but I can tell you based on three years of working as a law clerk in the Sonoma County Public Defender's office while going to law school, that anyone charged with a misdemeanor or felony who is unable to afford an attorney will be assigned a public defender, who should have all the skills, knowledge and experience to listen to your defenses, perhaps suggest others, and bring them to the attention of the court. My advice is to work with your PD cooperatively, and don't fail to appear for your court dates if you aren't in custody already because a failure to appear will cause a warrant to be issued and will reduce your chance for probation.
