Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California

Ex-Roommate Steals Property

We have an apartment in Anaheim and it is a two bedroom and we needed a extra roomate, so my roomate found a guy from her work that seemed like a good fit. After 3 months he didnt pay a single cent in rent or bills so we evicted him. The day he left he had taken most of his stuff and had taken my XBOX with games. I have tried for over a week to contact him but he will not answer his phone or call me back. Everytime he had told my roomates he would bring it back he wouldnt. I want to take action against him but I dont know where to start. I want my XBOX back and he had no right to take it in the first place, it is theft. Any advice you can give would help alot. Thank you.

Re: Ex-Roommate Steals Property

go to the police and file a theft report. then go to the court and file a small claims action for the amount of rent that he didn't pay, as well as for the cost of replacing your xbox.
