Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California

My girlfriend and I are currently 3 months into a 1 year rental lease in California. She's been diagnosed with Cancer and it looks like we need to move. Her treatment is hours from where we currently live, and commuting is not feasible.

Is there a way we can legally break our lease without financial penalty?
