Legal Question in Sexual Harassment in California

clothing in a work place

i work in the front office for a dentist who is a female. i too am female. one day she called me into the office and explained to me that she didn't like what i was wearing the day before because my ''boots were hidious'' and my ''skirt too tight and short'' this was not the case though and she was the only one in the office to think so. she eventually fired me because i told a co-worker that i was uncomfortable with what she said and that co-worker told the doctor. the doctor fired me and her reason was b/c i told someone about our conversation, and because my style just didn't mesh with the other employees. was this okay for her to do? i never signed a dresscode form either, so it really was surprising that one outfit could potentially get me fired.

Re: clothing in a work place

You're an at will employee and can be fired for any reason a company likes, or for no reason at all on a whim, unless it violates the discrimination or other laws, which this doesn't. Yes, companies can enforce dress codes. Your job is to please the company and help them make money. Improper conduct or appearance that they think offends customers, or causes problems in the workplace, will get you fired.
