Legal Question in Tax Law in California

Employer Filed State Tax Info Wrong

My Employer filed me as head of household, even though upon hiring I noted that I wanted married withholding as single, and 2. Now I owe the state $800. Is my employer at fault, and can they be held responsible for this?

I know it may seem harsh but it is your responsibility to check your withholding.

Your employer has no liability- you would have had to pay the same taxes in either case- if you are short of cash and explain the situation to your employer he may be willing to give you an advance to help you out.
