Legal Question in Tax Law in California

private fund raising

We have a friend who is undergoing brain surgery and extensive chemo which has taxed their resources to the breaking point. A large group of friends would like to hold a fundraiser to help the family. Are their legal ramifications we should know about and is there a possibility that donations can be tax deductible? We feel we'll get more donations if they are. Please help us understand what we should/can do. Thanks very much.

Re: private fund raising

About the only way you are going to be able to make this tax deductible is if you get a charitable organization involved (or start one) that will handle the gifts. Good luck.
