Foreign status. For further info, see the IRS website, with a copy of a W-8 form and instructions. It's very helpful sometimes just to read the form.

If you are exempt from backup withholding, but

are either a non-resident alien (individual), foreign entity, or exempt foreign person not subject to certain U.S. backup withholding rules or even certain U.S. reporting requirements, then you will be asked to fill in the W-8 by payers, mortgage interest recipients, brokers, et al.
