Legal Question in Traffic Law in California
I received a traffic ticket about a month ago for not wearing a bicycle helmet while bicycling. I know I am guilty of the crime but is it possible for my ticket to be overpriced? I live in California and the ticket came out to nearly 200 dollars. Looking online I saw that the Vehicle Code Section 21212 on section "e" states that, "Except as provided in subdivision (d),a violation of this section is an infraction punishable by a fine of not more than twenty-five dollars ($25)." This is my first ticket and I didn't attempt to run when I was stopped.

The fine may only be $25, but with the "penalty assessments" and other court costs on top of that, it adds up to way more than the base fine.
As a first offender, the judge may reduce the fine and/or offer a safety class as an alternate to pleading guilty to that fine. You'll have to appear in court to make that request. No guarantees of a reduction of alternative, but it doesn't hurt to ask.
